Dortmund "under no economical pressure" to sell Lewandowski, says Watzke

November 27, 2012

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watkze feels that there is no need to sell forward Robert Lewandowski for financial reasons.

The Poland international has been in outstanding form so far this season, scoring nine goals in 12 Bundesliga appearances. Despite having reportetly attracted the attention of big European clubs, the club's chief is confident in their ability to hold on to the player.

"Just to make one thing clear, we alone will make the decision [on whether or not he will be sold]," he told Kicker. "But of course we will discuss it with him."

Regarding the risk of potentially having to let go of the star for free at the end of his contract in 2014, Watzke said he is in no rush to make a decision.

He added: "It is simple math. Having Lewandowski play one more season could make more sense economically than to cash in a huge transfer sum. We are under no economical pressure to act."

Dortmund currently sit second in Bundesliga, nine points behind table-toppers Bayern Munich. They host Fortuna Dusseldorf on November 27 and play the league leaders next Saturday.
